Thoughts On Deadpool

Deadpool is a fun movie. If you like superhero movies and want to watch something a bit different within the trappings of people in costumes punching things, go see it. That is all you really need to know.

Okay, okay, you’ve twisted my arm I’ll give you a bit more!

Avengers: Age of Ultron – Review

Age of Ultron, man what a film! I went in with a slight apprehension after the mixed reviews started coming out but thankfully Marvel, Joss Whedon and Co. have done it again!

I would go as far as to say it is actually the most comic book like film Marvel Studios had come out with to date. Rather than trying to re-hash the first film Joss Whedon instead has opted to borrow the current Marvel Comics structure of having all the characters doing their own thing in their solo series (i.e. the other Phase 2 movies) then having a big event that brings everyone together for big action, grand ideas and shake ups of status quo. Age of Ultron is that event and it rocks!

Avengers: Age of Ultron – Tailer #2!

Well Marvel Studios certainly like to keep us on the edge of our seats! Last week they gave us the first Ant-Man Trailer, now comes the second trailer for Age of Ultron!

While it covers much of the same ground as the first trailer. We do see a couple of new bits and pieces. Extensions to scenes we have seen already, oh and everything is bleak. Very, very, very bleak for the Avengers. It looks like they are indeed going for the darker second act with the Avengers films and I’m sort of ok with that. There will still be room for quips and the odd gag here or there but otherwise this looks like things are going to get bad, fast for our heroes. (After the Iron Man Vs Hulk fight that will open the movie of course!) I always enjoy characters getting put through hell before emerging victorious and it looks like this film will deliver on that in spades.

Also what are the current odds on people saying Age of Ultron will be Marvel’s “Empire” due to all the bleakness?

Avengers: Age of Ultron Trailer #1 Thoughts

The first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron has been unleashed upon the world, in part due to it being leaked early. Ever up for a joke Marvel took the leak in it’s stride:

Still the trailer is a great taste of the epic-ness to come. I don’t really have time to go into detail on my full thoughts on the trailer but I will try and condense it into bullet point form:

Guardians of the Galaxy Character Profiles and Poster!

Not content to let us all recover from the first trailer Marvel have released the first poster for Guardians of the Galaxy along with a bunch of very quick character profiles.

The poster emphasises Marvel’s past successes as a way to garner interest and the character profiles intercut footage from the trailer with behind the scenes clips and interviews. It is all fairly standard but helps give a taste for those not versed in who this ragtag group of heroes are.

Most importantly though is that we get to see a snippet of Bradley Cooper giving his voice to Rocket Raccoon. One thing we do not get however is Vin Diesel saying, “I am Groot” which makes me sad…

Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer!

It’s finally here! The Guardians of the Galaxy are here and in a big way and it is about damn time!

This trailer gives us a perfect taste of what is to come in the final film. It has got that cool grimy sci-fi look that I like, explosions (lots of explosions), a diverse set of characters and aliens, 80s music and of course, raccoons. It is gonna be awesome!

Marvel One-Shot “All Hail The King” Teaser

“Bloody hell, it’s not exactly The Rtiz is it?”

I love the Marvel One Shot shorts that come on the Blu-Rays for their films. They have always been nice little additions to the extra features and since the Avengers they have proven a good way of fleshing out the MCU a bit more in between the main movies.

I am excited about All Hail The King in particular because I am a fan of the Mandarin/Trevor Slattery twist in Iron Man 3. In particular how it deftly side-stepped the inherent racism in the character of the Mandarin and chose to highlight the nature of Superhero Vs Supervillain relationships and dynamics of the culture of fear perpetuated by the news media instead. (See comic book movies can slip in the odd wink to on-topic issues between the explosions and awesomeness!)

That and Ben Kingsley can be a very funny man when he wants to be. You can tell he loves the character and the complete daftness of him. He gets a chance to step into his shoes again and we get a chance to find out more about him while laughing at his antics. Everyone is a winner!

Amazing Spider-Man 2 International Trailer

Showing once again that people outside of America prefer substance to pure action! 😛

This international trailer for ASM2 gives us a bit more character stuff, in particular Peter being a goof and how the whole Osborn thing will be the major threat of the film. Which I’m fine with. It also looks like they will be going Ultimate Spider-Man route of having Norman Osborn basically saying “Join me and be evil or die horribly.” Which again is great because it was a nice wrinkle to their relationship in Ultimate that I like. Norman felt like he owned Peter and that he should do whatever he wanted. It showed a very twisted side to him and if done right in the film could also add further to the Harry/Norman dynamic.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 1st Trailer!

Hey look it! The first trailer for the next Spider-Man movie!

The first ASM film received a lot of flak when it came out due to the internet being a grumpy place and the film not really being quite as good as it could have been. It was still a great film and nowhere near as bad as some people claim it to be. (Also IMO it has one of the best Stan Lee cameos out of all the movies featuring Marvel characters) Flawed but good. That was the first film in a nutshell.

From this action packed trailer for the sequel I got the sense that they are ramping up the two subplots from the first movie (Oscorp being evil and Peter’s parents having something to do with it) and bringing them into the foreground as the reason for Spidey facing off against not one but THREE bad guys in the new film. Now multiple villains are always a hard thing to do in a superhero movie but I think ASM2 has the chance and the sheer gall to pull it off. Having the three villains linked together by Oscorp and Norman controlling things from his death bed immediately cuts down on time need to explain everything. They can just deal with it all in one or two scenes and move on with the movie. No lengthy backstories in an attempt to make one of the villains a sympathetic character at the expense of fleshing out your other villains. (Also basically do not do anything that Spider-Man 3 did) Also the need for multiple villains is a necessity in this and the next Spidey film because the end goal is a Sinister Six focused movie to bring them all together to knock seven shades of crap out of Andrew Garfield. So part of me is willing to go along for the ride if it means we get the Spider-Man equivalent of the Anti-Avengers.
