It’s great to see Steve back in the suit doing what he does best!

The Pull List 03/02/2016

pull list 0302

Every week I throw my money into the bottomless pit that is regular comic book reading.

Here is what I will be entertaining myself with this week along with snippets of my feelings towards said books prior to reading them:

DC

  • Action Comics #49
    • The saga of powerless Superman continues!
    • This crossover of sorts between the various Superman books is surprisingly entertaining and is paying off on the last year’s worth of stories.
  • Batgirl #48
    • Bright, colourful and always fun to read.
  • Batman & Robin Eternal #18
    • The answers are slowly coming! Some a good, some are a bit…boring.
  • Detective Comics #49
    • Robo-Batman minus the Robo equals some solid detective work from Jim.

Marvel

  • Amazing Spider-Man #7
    • I love Dan Slott’s Spider-Man but so far this has felt like it is too big of a departure from classic Spidey for me.
    • It is like Peter Parker is trying a bit too hard to be Tony Stark.
  • Captain America: Sam Wilson #6
    • This book is crazy in a good way.
    • It is full of pulpy ideas and has great moments for both character and story.
  • Invincible Iron Man #6
    • Loving Bendis’ take on Iron Man, making him feel on the cutting edge again.
    • It will be interesting to see the contrast between Mike Deodato Jr. art for this issue and David Marquez’s from the first arc.
  • Nova #6
    • I love this book.
    • It is where the fun is at!
  • Star Wars: Obi-Wan & Anakin
    • Issue one introduced us to an old fashioned adventure story that explores the Post Episode I Obi-Wan/Anakin dynamic.
    • I’m interested to see how it plays out.
    • + Steampunk airships in Star Wars!
  • Spider-Man #1
    • Miles Morales is finally getting his dues as a mainline Marvel Prime Universe character!
  • Uncanny Avengers #5
    • Its been a bit of a rocky start so far but I am willing to follow it for one or two more issues.

Image/Other

  • Klaus #3
    • It is the Secret Origin of Santa Claus!
    • It is written by Grant Morrison!
    • It is actually a good read!
  • The Walking Dead #151
    • After finishing another calm before the storm stage The Walking Dead is getting exciting again!

All-New, All-Different Avengers Teaser

All-New_All-Different_Avengers_Assemble_1-674x1024

Marvel sure knows how to get everyone talking! This cover for the Free Comic Book Day issue of The All-New, All-Different Avengers is our first glimpse at the post Secret Wars Avengers line up. So far we have the soon to be unmasked new Thor (YAY!) and my favourite new hero of the past few years, Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan (Double YAY!!) confirmed for the team. Then in an interesting move all the male characters are silhouetted to provoke speculation, finger pointing and mass hysteria amongst comic book fans.

So here is my take on who the remaining team members are.

Marvel’s Phase 1 & 2 – A Look Back

This video is basically 5 minutes of Marvel saying, “Hey look at how awesome we are at making Comic Book Movies!” But it is five very good minutes of Marvel showing how much they have achieved with their films over the past six years and that they are only just getting started.

Fair warning though at the end there is a mild spoiler for something that happens in Guardians of the Galaxy so if you haven’t watched it yet (and why haven’t you watched Guardians yet?!) stay clear until you do.

Superbowl Trailer Round Up

amazing-spider-man-2-football

Yesterday over the pond in America they had their yearly celebration of all things ‘Merica. I believe it is something to do with a rugby ball, some very alternative rules for football, people eating a lot of food and shouting at their TVs. It also means we get new trailers for the year’s biggest movies because nothing says sports like trailers for movies where you will sit on your bum for two to three hours!

So first up we have The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

2 for 1 Awesomeness of the Week!

Should hopefully be getting a couple of reviews up this week and next but in the mean time enjoy the pretty pictures!

Awesomeness of the Week!

Awesomeness of the Week

I am starting to get busier outside of writing posts for this little comics blog so in order to streamline things a bit I am smashing together Panels and Covers of the Week into one post of awesome!

So here are the things that took my fancy this week:

Marvel Ultimate Graphic Novel Collection Reviews

Captain America: The New Deal

Captain America: The New Deal (John Ney Rieber & John Cassaday)

The New Deal is a different Captain America comic from the norm. This is because of the hows and whys of it being made. What initially started as a grim and gritty Marvel Knights relaunch of the book turned into the first post 9/11 Cap comic once the horrific events of that day in 2001 took place. So instead of being a new and darker take and a well known character suddenly writer, John Ney Rieber found himself with the task of giving us Steve Roger’s reaction to the attacks, how it changed him and as a result America. A very daunting task indeed.

What we end up with is a very interesting comic that kicked-off the more politically aware Captain America of the modern age and Marvel as a whole. It could be said that the ground and ideas explored here eventually lead to the gripping run by Ed Brubaker that has only just finished and major Marvel events like Civil War that re-shaped the Marvel Universe and delved into the politics of being a superhero. It is not 100% perfect however and due to the time it came out it is very raw emotionally.

Picks of the Week

We are going back to the standard size for this week’s Picks of the Week and it has been yet another great week for my personal pull list. It may have been lighter than most weeks but it sure did pack a punch.

Over in Marvel’s camp we get a couple more relaunched books and everything else winding down or making those last big story steps (Amazing Spider-Man #698 OH MY GOD!). Oddly it also seems to be a week for letters from the writers and editors to take up space in multiple comics released this week which is a nice touch. On the DC side of life we got the continuation of some very strong stories that have spun out of the recent zero issues or where kicked off just before zero month hit. We also finally get some explanation as to what is going on with this whole H’El on Earth storyline in Supergirl #14. (Which despite this is still not one of picks of the week)

So make a cup of tea (the English kind none of that flimsy American herbal stuff!), get comfy and read up on my picks for the past week’s comics.

WARNING though, there will be SPOILERS!
