If you are a frequent visitor to this site you will see that I am very excited for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie from Marvel Studios. (Some might say overly excited but they can flark off!) Not only is Guardians yet another comic book I love being given the big screen treatment but it is also a turning point for the grand experiment that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Perhaps Marvel’s biggest gamble since the original plan to use a few movies to build to the Avengers (aka. The Best Film Ever Made) Guardians is based on a set of characters that not many people know of. Even for those that do know of them, even less of them have read the source material.
In the comics world until the past year or so, Guardians of the Galaxy was a niche book that quietly did its own thing whenever it was being published. Now though it is one of the cornerstones of the comics, seriously if you are not already reading it, start reading Bendis’ Guardians of the Galaxy. It has slowly been ramping up in action and coolness as we approach the release of the film and is well worth checking out.
This new trailer for the film has me giddy with excitement. It really does seem like everything has come together to make a damn fine looking film. It has that grungy sci-fi look that I like, the characters are great, the setting is unique when compared to things like Star Wars and Star Trek. The Cosmic side of the Marvel Universe is rich and crazy and I am looking forward to seeing a lot of it teased out in this sure to be epic film. This trailer also gives us a taste of something that is a requirement, comical banter between the characters. In particular Rocket and Star-Lord. We get to see Chris Pratt flex his considerable comedic skills and play off against the craziness that is Rocket as a character, with what looks to be a great voice performance from Bradley Cooper. Topped off with a well-timed “I am Groot” from Vin Diesel it plays out like a page from the comic. I could not be happier!
With a month and a half until the UK release date of July 21st the wait, for me, is a long one. Just thank the comic gods that it looks like it is going to be worth it.
